A high-quality history education will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It should inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. History helps pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.
At Marton, we have designed the curriculum to provide challenge and develop skills of asking questions, thinking critically, weighing evidence and developing perspective and judgement whilst gaining a depth of historical knowledge. We aim to build on previous learning using Marton’s history progressive curriculum and progression of skills whilst always taking into account, referencing and reinforcing prior knowledge and understanding.
History in our school reflects our Christian ethos; we believe that by teaching children to think critically through our Christian vision of ‘Sow, Nurture, Grow’, that they are able to weigh evidence and develop perspective and judgement about the world that we live in whilst gaining a depth of historical knowledge.
We sow the skills of historical critical thinking, questioning and analysis of sources as well as allowing them to consider cause, continuity and change. We ground the children’s understanding in a vocabulary rich curriculum by sowing these abstract historical terms which allow them to talk about historical concepts and connections.
We nurture their curiosity about the past and inspire them to ask questions and think critically while building up their depth of knowledge and understanding of chronology, context and timescales which allows them to make historical connections.
History helps pupils understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. This supports our children as they grow into confident, compassionate, members of our community able to share the values of Agape, Communion and Justice as they continue to question the world around them.
For everything that was written in the past was written to teach us, so that through the endurance taught in the Scriptures and the encouragement they provide we might have hope.
