Novice Netballers in League Action12 October 2021 (by Kaite Worlock (vicechair)) |
Marton’s super seven year sixes played their first (and second) ever competitive fixtures today in the Congleton primary school league.
With only a handful of training sessions and the majority of the team only having started playing in September our first two matches against The Quinta and Mossley were always going to be a big challenge.
Match one got off to a bumpy start with minor injuries to two players leaving us with only six on the court twice in the first half. After some rapid positional changes and both players coming back on to continue we tried really hard and managed some encouraging passing but were a little bit intimidated by a much taller, more physical Quinta team. The final score was 13-0 to The Quinta which doesn’t represent how hard they had to try, but does reflect how tall their goal shooter was!
Onto match two against Mossley and we were so much better. More settled, more focussed and we even managed to replicate some moves from training. Possession in this match was much more even and some of our passing play was really lovely. Although we lost this match too, 8-0, the improvement was clear and the other umpire came across to congratulate the girls which is wonderful.
You all tried really hard today and I’m very proud of all of you. However I do have to mention a couple of you in particular; Charlotte for some demon defending and too many interceptions to count, and Teresa for stepping into centre in the first half of the first match and absolutely smashing it. A special mention to Jess too, who as goal shooter didn’t see very much action today but kept smiling even when she was shivering.
Brilliant to see smiling faces and your confidence growing girls, keep it up. Thanks parents for your transport and support. I hope they all sleep well tonight?
