    Scarlet Fever information for families

    21 September 2022 (by headmarton)

We have been advised that there are confirmed cases of Scarlet Fever across the borough and have been asked to inform you.

Scarlet fever is a contagious infection that mostly affects young children. It's easily treated with antibiotics. The first signs of scarlet fever can be flu-like symptoms, including a high temperature, a sore throat and swollen neck glands (a large lump on the side of your neck). A rash appears 12 to 48 hours later and looks like small, raised bumps starting on the chest and tummy, then spreads. The rash makes your skin feel rough, like sandpaper.

Children and adults with suspected scarlet fever should not attend school until 24 hours after starting appropriate antibiotic treatment.

Whilst scarlet fever is circulating it is important that any children and adults with chickenpox stay off school until all their blisters have dried over, which is usually 5 days after they first appeared.

Further information can be found via website: NHS conditions, scarlet fever

Please inform school if you have any confirmed cases at home.

    Best wishes, Nevin Deakin
