A message from Mr Marks11 May 2023 (by Year5) |
A number of years ago I set myself the aim of completing a Half Ironman before my 40th Birthday. Unfortunately, I turned 40 last year and missed this target. However, I have taken the plunge and I am now signed up to take part in the Staffordshire Half Ironman on June 11th 2023, only 1 year later than planned and a matter of weeks away!!
The Half Ironman consists of completing a 1.2 mile swim in a lake, 56 miles on a bike and then a 13.1 mile run to finish. I have been training over the Winter and Spring for this event in order to be able to give myself the best possible chance of not only completing the event, but also to come away with an acceptable time.
During the training phase of this, we very sadly lost my wife’s sister, Emma. Emma was and always will be remembered for her energy, her laughs and her ability to bring smiles to people. Later in life, Emma had battles with addiction and mental health and was helped by numerous local charities.
It is for the above reason, that I am aiming to complete this event and raise much needed funds to support MIND, a charity that helps people suffering from mental health problems. They give people the skills and help to deal with the challenges that life throw at us all, but for some people these problems consume all and have devastating consequences.
