    Special news from Mrs McLean

    27 June 2025 (by headmarton)

At the beginning of the summer term the school achieved the next award with the Royal Horticultural Society who valued our use of the outdoor space for wellbeing of pupils and the harvesting of our own supplies for the kitchen. This term the boys in year 5 and 6, along with the attendees of gardening club have been working very hard towards a further accolade. None of this would have been possible without the help of our wonderful F&F, who have secured two grants for us and to all our many parents and families who have donated time to build hedges, paint fences, make planters or donated plants and seeds towards our new Plant Partnership Programme. Our outdoor gardening settings are gradually being changed or upgraded enabling the school to increase the biodiversity of native wildlife and increase pollinators.

On Monday we had a visitor from a local company, who had kindly donated to this project and was very complementary about all that was being achieved at our school. They said:

‘It was a pleasure to visit the gardening club at Marton & District Primary School on a blustery June afternoon, where I was greeted by Kate, a member of the teaching staff and Becky from the Friends and Family Association. The children were full of enthusiasm for the jobs in hand - weeding, watering and collecting wood for the log pile house.

The aims of the club are to show the children how to grow food to eat and to attract pollinating insects to the school grounds.  I saw potatoes, tomatoes, peas and herbs being grown in wooden planters and in the poly tunnel.  Some of the food has already been used by the school kitchens and the children have taken home some tomato plants so they can take care of them when the school holidays start.’

A proud moment for us all and our thanks to each and every one of you who have helped us on this journey.

Watch out for the changes over the summer. Bring on our next award!

    Thanks again.
