Weekly news from Mrs Deakin
We have had some beautiful autumn weather this week and it’s been a pleasure to see children so active at playtimes in the sunshine. Let’s hope the weekend has warmer weather for us all too.
Our school PCSO’s have been in to school over the past two weeks and delivered some brilliant sessions for children including Stranger Danger, Role of the Police and Staying Safe Online. We hope your children have told you all about these special visits.
On Tuesday the photographer will be in school for individual and sibling photos. The photographs will be taken outside as the weather forecast is good. Please can all children be in complete uniform. Children are looking so smart and I would like to thank you for all your support with uniform.
Thank you for all your support too with our Mid-Day vacancies this week, we had a great amount of interest and interviewed lots of people. We will look forward to welcoming new staff to school soon.
Weekly news from our busy classes:
- Reception have been exploring the What makes me a me? book. We have been talking about what makes us special and unique. The children had lots of different ideas. We went on a Autumn walk around our lovely school grounds to collect different aspects of Autumn which we then turned these items into very unique portrait of our faces. Our highlight of the week was the visit from the police who talked about their important job and let us explore the police car including the sirens!
- This week, Year 1 have been enjoying the story of 'Tiddler' and practising their storytelling skills by retelling his tall tales. He has some very interesting reasons for being late to school! We have also been practising our number formation, creating shape pictures using the iPads, and everyone has now had the opportunity to borrow a book from our School Library to enjoy at home.
- Year 2 have been busy learners this week. On Monday, the children looked at all the wonderful technology from the past that you sent in. It was so wonderful to explain how things worked and how things have changed over the years. On Tuesday, we went out in to the woods and we created little homes for mice using clay and natural resources, this was to show the specific needs for survival, although I am not sure that a toilet is an essential for mice.
- Year 3 have been continuing their learning of reading VIPERS this week. Our focus has been prediction, where we have been making smart guesses (backed with evidence in the text and our own knowledge) about a mysterious ‘Box In The Attic’. Reading VIPERS are new to the class and the children have blown me away with their enthusiasm and obvious love of reading! Congratulations to the Y3 reading raffle winners this week too! You’ve got to be in it to…win it!
- What an exciting time we’ve had in Year 4! In maths, we’ve been cracking the code of Roman numerals – and we can even write the date using them like real Romans! In art, we’ve been learning how to use perspective to make our pictures look 3D and jump off the page – the results are amazing! Our history lessons have sparked some brilliant debates as we’ve asked the big question: Who was the best Roman leader? The children have been great at giving reasons and backing up their choices. And in music, the sound of our new harvest song is already filling the classroom as we get ready for our Harvest Festival – we can’t wait to share it with you! Year 4 are really showing curiosity, creativity, and teamwork in everything we do.
- Year 5 have had another wonderful week, working hard to secure their understanding of different types of verbs, impressing me with their brilliant spelling test results for the -tious rule and we even welcomed King’s School for our science workshop. We thoroughly enjoyed making everlasting bouncy balls and colour skittle wheels! What a week it’s been
- Year 6 have been busy this week learning all about square and cube numbers in maths, as well as carrying out a survey to investigate how we use plastics in school. In art, we’ve been honing our sketching skills to create detailed, realistic drawings of lips – with some fantastic results already taking shape, and we can’t wait to build on these skills even further next week!
- The children who attend Elsa have been working hard this week focusing on building resilience. I also had the pleasure of working with year 4 on Tuesday, where we created our own resilience rafts highlighting the people who keep us afloat. Year 4 also joined me in my weekly session of Emotion in Motion on Wednesday in which children learn the importance of keeping your minds and bodies healthy while enjoying a gentle workout.
Enjoy your weekend, Nevin Deakin
