Weekly news from Mrs Deakin
French Day was ‘magnifique’ on Monday; children took part in a carousel of exciting activities planned throughout the day and it was so wonderful to hear children speaking French. Merci Mrs Wilson for organising this special day.
Children had their photos taken on Tuesday outside in our beautiful grounds and we are looking forward to seeing these soon. This year we have used a different school photographer after discussions with some families so we are excited to see these new portraits.
Our first Little Seeds session took place on Wednesday and it was a delight to welcome some new faces to our monthly meet up. Please don’t forget to share that we host these on the first Wednesday of each month. All very welcome!
Rev Jim conducted Worship on Thursday and reinforced our weekly theme of Caring for Creation. Please don’t forget Year 6 Parents and Carers are welcome to join us on Monday @ 9.15am for Year 6 Class Worship to launch Mental Health week (we’ve a very exciting week planned for children next week). Don’t forget our Wellbeing Fundraiser Sale @ lunchtimes next week too!
Next week is a pretty busy week as Years 5 & 6 children will also take part in Bikeability sessions and we are hoping for good weather.
Weekly news from our busy classes:
- Reception have been busy learning lots of new phonics sounds and practising their verbal blending of sounds to make words. It is quite tricky so Metal Mike has been helping us lots. We have been sharing our families with each other. Thank-you to all the parents who have sent in photos of their families / homes / activities / pets. All of our families are unique and special!
- Year 1 have had great fun reading 'The Ugly Five' this week and writing some brilliant descriptions of the characters (especially the smelly, pooey ones!). We're also getting ready for the Harvest Festival by practising our song. We're learning about the continents in Geography — Mrs Sparey is very sorry for the catchy continents song you've been hearing at home! We sound amazing, but we're singing it on repeat!
- Year 2 have continued to get to grips with spotting the subject and verbs in basic sentence writing. They have also been learning to replace the subject with pronouns. In Maths we have been looking at fact families of calculations and then using these facts and related facts to add and take away bigger numbers. We loved French Day, hearing a children's favourite story read in a different language was brilliant and the croissants were definitely a big hit.
- Year 3 really enjoyed French Day on Monday. The day brought opportunities to work with a language teacher from Eaton Bank Academy and also visit all of the KS2 classrooms to take part in an activity. This all added to the excitement of the day! In RE, we studied what people of faith pray at harvest time and discussed ways of saying thank you for the harvest. We’re looking forward to our own harvest festival too and have started rehearsing!
- Year 4 had an incredible time on French Day this week, with lots of exciting activities to enjoy – our favourite was definitely mime with Year 5! In English, we’ve been working hard on punctuation and grammar, confidently spotting subjects, verbs and “leftovers,” while also focusing on improving our handwriting. In RE, we explored fascinating stories from different religions and discussed the important values they teach us . What a brilliant week of learning!
- Year 5 we have had another busy week reminding ourselves of how to identify subjects and verbs in single-clause sentences, using scaffolds to tackle more challenging explanation reading questions and showing off some brilliant mime skills on French Day. I am so proud of the amazing spelling scores this week - it is clear all children are working hard at home as well as in school. We are all excited about Bikeability next week too! Happy Friday everyone!
- Year 6 have had a busy week preparing for their upcoming class worship on Monday 6th October. In science, we’ve been learning all about microorganisms, while in PE we’ve been developing our ball passing and intercepting skills. Maths has kept us busy with long multiplication and short division, and we loved celebrating French Day on Monday – listening to Miss Peckham (who is half French) read us a story and discovering more about key French figures such as Louis Pasteur and Coco Chanel!
Parents Surgery will take place on Tuesday 7th October @ 9am at school.
We will be discussing Parental Involvement and seeking your suggestions for ways we can engage with you further. For instance do you use our busy website and find out what your children are learning about, is School Jotter easily accessible, your thoughts about Homework etc? All Parents/Carers are welcome but we will not discuss individual children’s learning as this is an open meeting. This meeting will be for an hour and a School Governor will be present. If you are unable to join F2F please email me direct and I can invite you to join us remotely. My direct email is head@marton.cheshire.sch.uk
The weather forecast predicts poor weather over the weekend, so please keep safe, Nevin Deakin
