    Weekly news from Mrs Deakin

    Head’s Up!

Harvest on Wednesday was simply glorious and we thank you all for your generous donations and Harvest gifts. They will make such a great contribution to local families via New Life Church and for our own school families via our Pantry. Please take whatever you wish from inside the school foyer.

Weekly news from our busy classes:

    • This week, farming and autumn have taken over Reception.  They have been exploring where food comes from, autumn vegetables and the important job famers do.  In phonics, reception have started their writing journey. They have all written their first word which involved so many new skills. Reception took a deep breath and stood up in front of the whole school to perform the harvest song. Mrs Owen and Miss Forster were so proud of each and every one of them as they were so brave and confident. One member of the class asked if he could do it all again in the afternoon. Now, they are already looking forward to the Christmas performance!

    • Mrs Sparey was so proud of Year 1 this week as they performed an amazing version of the 12 days of Harvest in our Harvest Festival.  In R.E., we have been thinking about Harvest and have talked about the vital role farmers play as well as discussing how we can actively help those who don't have enough food.  The hands-on learning continued as we explored addition number sentences in Maths and we have made excellent progress building strong and stable free-standing structures in DT .  Mrs Woodmass has joined us this week and has helped us explore our emotional literacy.

    • Year 2 have been busy learners again this week. We have continued with our History topic, this week we have created a timeline of changes in the way we get entertainment. The children were astonished to know that Mr Marks remembered there being only 4 channels on the television when he was growing up. The children performed their poem beautifully at our wonderful Harvest Festival and it was so lovely to have so many families there supporting them. Please keep on bringing in plastic bottles, we have started turning them in to poppies but we need lots more.

    • Year 3 were delighted to perform in the Harvest Festival this week. Thank you to our families for coming along to support us! In RE, we have been learning about harvest across the world and the Christian values displayed at harvest time. The children have created some beautiful ‘values baskets’ in their work. In art, we have been looking closely at the way artists draw faces and focussing on the mouth this week, ready for our final self-portraits next week!

    • Year 4's highlight of the week was definitely performing in our amazing Harvest Festival on Wednesday. We are so creative and love to express ourselves through music and dance. In History we learnt about Boudicca and debated whether she was a hero or a villain. After lots of debate we came to the decision that she was a brave and powerful queen who stood up for her people. This also links to our school value of justice. We also had a fun time exploring our grounds with Mr Marks for some outdoor learning where we classified leaves and collected data. Mr Marks commented on how grown up we all our now showing inquisitiveness and hard work. Well done Year 4!!!

    • Year 5 have had another super week filled with excitement and achievement! The highlight was without a doubt their brilliant performance at the Harvest Festival — they truly shone on stage, and Miss Heath and I couldn’t be prouder. We’re continuing to enjoy every moment of our class text, Cosmic, which is sparking some inspiring ideas for our upcoming non-chronological reports on planets. To top it off, we’re just a few compliments away from earning our very first class treat — what a fantastic effort, Year 5!
    • P.S. I had the pleasure of teaching Year 5 this week and we loved learning about Rhyming Couplets and even took part in some Brain Gym! See you next week Year 5, Mrs Deakin

    • In Year 6, we’ve been rehearsing and performing our K-Pop-inspired Harvest Festival song, and in RE we’ve created a colourful ‘Names of God’ graffiti wall. In English, we’ve started our first genre focus — writing a non-chronological report all about yellow-spotted lizards, inspired by our class text Holes. We even sketched detailed drawings of the lizards to support our writing — a fantastic mix of creativity and learn.

We finish next Friday for half term and as a reminder, please make a note of the dates below, particularly Parents Evening which takes place in November. We will share details of these events after half term.

    Enjoy the weekend, Nevin Deakin
