Weekly news from Mrs Deakin
We’ve had another busy and exciting week at Marton! Here’s a quick round-up of what’s been happening and what’s coming up next week:
Weekly news from our Busy Classes;
- Reception have started the new half term with a BANG. We have been exploring bonfire night including what happens and why. We acted out a simple version of the Gunpower plot story and tried to understand how long... long... long time ago it happened. We had a mystery sign appear in the classroom about a lost red leaf. We had no idea how it had appeared or how we could help. We are looking forward to find out more next week. Watch this space!
- A lovely festive feel has arrived in Year 1 as we've begun practising for our Christmas play, 'The Inn Crowd' – apologies in advance for the very catchy songs! Alongside our rehearsals, we've started our new subtraction topic in Maths by having fun with number sentences and have launched our fascinating new History topic all about toys.
- We have had a great week back after half term in Year 2. We have been well and truly introduced to Christmas songs. Hopefully they will soon be stuck INN their heads! We have started using all of our PVPG knowledge and have written the beginning of our Non-chronological report about minibeasts. The class have struggled a bit this week with their subtractions. We have been taking 2 digit numbers away where we cross the ten and exchange, if you could give your child some assistance with this, it would be greatly valued.
- It’s been an exciting week in Year 3! On Monday, we began our brand-new French topic all about pets “les animaux domestiques!” The children loved making actions and practising their new French vocabulary. On Wednesday, we once again travelled back in time to the Stone Age to learn all about what people ate thousands of years ago. The children were fascinated (and a little bit grossed out!) to discover how historians found out exactly what Stone Age people ate, which led to a very curious discussion about the digestive system. Yuck! To finish the week in style, some of our talented Year 3 dancers performed their fantastic ‘Come Alive’ routine at Eaton Bank Academy. What a show it was - full of energy and smiles! Well done Year 3!
- What a fantastic start to the new half term! Year 4 have jumped straight back into learning with enthusiasm and energy. This week, we’ve been practising our 3 and 6 times tables, using fun songs and rhythms to help us remember them. The classroom has been full of music, movement and lots of brilliant singing! We learned all about Thomas Edison and his incredible inventions and how his ideas changed the world. As part of our Roman topic, we created our own Roman laurel wreaths. We felt just like Roman emperors wearing our crowns with pride! And to finish off an exciting week, some of us danced our socks off at the Dance Festival! We shone on stage, showed off our moves and represented our school brilliantly.
- What a brilliant week it has been in Year 5! We have jumped enthusiastically into our exciting new writing unit—a non-chronological report all about the fascinating fictional planet of Luminara. Our imaginations have been shining brightly as we explore its mysterious landscapes, unusual creatures, and dazzling skies. We were also very fortunate to welcome King's High School again for a fantastic teambuilding session, which was not only great fun but helped us strengthen our cooperation and communication skills. Adding to the excitement, Mr Myers has visited us twice this week, and we are all eagerly looking forward to him joining us full time next Monday. What a week!
- Year 6 have had a wonderful first week back after half term! We’ve already started thinking about Christmas through our new RE topic on the Christian season of Advent, reflecting on our own family traditions at this special time of year. In our ELSA session (have you seen our post on Facebook?), we explored coping strategies for dealing with difficult situations — and enjoyed some delicious hot chocolate with marshmallows too! We also kicked off our new history topic on Crime and Punishment by discovering what justice looked like in Ancient Roman times.
Parents’ Evening reminder to sign up for your appointment to meet your child’s class teacher next week. Children may go home early after your meeting. Please note: MAD House will be based in the Year 2 classroom on Monday and Wednesday.
Our Bonfire Lunch Day on Wednesday was a great success and very tasty! A big thank you to Rachel and Liz for preparing such a delicious meal. The Book Fair is now open and will be available until next Thursday. Congratulations to our five Book Fair competition winners who each received a £5 book voucher for their fantastic “Book Cover About Marton” designs - well done!
This week’s Little Seeds Stay and Play session was wonderful, thank you to everyone who joined us. Our next session will be on Wednesday 3rd December when we’ll be joined by a special visitor dressed in red!
Our children have been very active this week: Years 3 and 4 performed brilliantly at the Eaton Bank Dance Festival this week. Your hard work and enthusiasm really shone through and Year 5 Remembrance Worship on Friday was really beautiful. Thank you Year 5 for leading such a meaningful and memorable reflection for our school community. We were delighted to welcome some Christian Leadership visitors on Friday and share all the wonderful things happening at Marton, our Ethos group were heavily involved in this day and were just brilliant! It’s certainly felt good to be back to school!
To celebrate Anti-Bullying Week, we’d love everyone to wear Odd Socks on Friday 14th November. It’s a fun way to celebrate our differences and remind us all to choose kindness.
Thank you as always, for your continued support.
Wishing you a lovely weekend,
Nevin Deakin
