    Weekly news from Mrs Deakin

    Head’s Up!

What a brilliant week we have all had!

Year 4 returned from their Robinwood residential trip and have had an amazing time. Many thanks to Mrs Wood, Mrs Woodmass and Mrs McLean for accompanying the children and taking part in activities. Children had such a wonderful time and it has been a pleasure to hear all about their activities.

We welcomed back Little Seeds this week and the hall was very busy indeed on Wednesday. It’s so lovely to see and hear so many new families enjoying being part of our school family and we look ahead to next month’s Little Seeds session which takes place on Wednesday 4th March.

Please don’t forget Parents Surgery takes place on Tuesday @ 9am along with Year 2 Parent’s Assembly.

Cupcake Friday last week was a delicious end of the week treat and next Friday children are welcome to attend school wearing their own clothes (and bring something chocolatey) for F&F’s Family Bingo which will take place on Friday 27th Feb.

Marton busy bees and our ELSA/Chief Bee Mrs Woodmass will be providing a Tuck Shop once a month and this will launch next Friday. Children are welcome to bring any pocket money into school to buy sweeties. This will take place during afternoon play.

    News from our busy classes:

Reception have enjoyed learning all about penguins, discovering where they live and what they need to survive. The children used paint printing to create the correct cold climate for a penguin, exploring colours and textures to represent ice and snow. They also learned how a penguin egg is kept warm and safe until it cracks open, thinking carefully about care and protection. During Forest School, the children explored how penguins walk and move, going on their own journeys and waddling together, building balance, coordination, and teamwork through imaginative play.

Year 1 have worked so hard on their retelling of Jack and the Beanstalk, and I have been so pleased with their writing, they can sequence a narrative, create good sentences and their writing stamina has really improved!  There are quite a few golden acorns this week!  Mrs Sparey has been amazed by their attitudes to our new Golden Challenges.  The little booklets they have made have been fantastic; we've really enjoyed reading them to each other. We've finished our art topic by painting an abstract piece of work based on their feelings, they've tried hard but it's so tempting to paint a realistic picture!  Your painting skills have really developed this term - well done Year 1.

This week in Year 2, we have continued writing our instructions about being a mighty explorer. In Maths we have introduced the multiplication symbol and being looking at all the different ways to make arrays. We completed our map task by drawing a map of the local Marton area using a key. We also joined forces with Reception and went to look for all the signs that Spring is coming, the snowdrops and the daffodils are starting to make an appearance and it is so lovely to see. We look forward to welcoming the Year 2 parents to our Safer Internet Day assembly on Tuesday.

This week in Year 3, we have been exploring how illustrations influence everyday life in Art, while also developing skills in blending watercolour paints. In Geography, we have been learning about topography and discovering the physical features of the United Kingdom. Our learning in RE has focused on the life of Mother Teresa, reflecting on her inspiring example of service and the important lessons we learn from her compassion and dedication.

Year 4 spent an unforgettable three days at Robinwood, where every child challenged themselves by trying every single activity on offer. From zip wires and the giant swing to dungeons, climbing walls, trapeze, archery, canoeing and the infamous Piranha Pool, the children showed real bravery and determination throughout the trip. Some activities quickly became firm favourites, particularly the high ropes challenge course, along with the giant swing and zip wire, which pushed children well beyond their comfort zones. It was fantastic to see how willing everyone was to give things a go, even when they felt nervous. The residential gave us a wonderful opportunity to see the class in a different light. The children worked hard on developing resilience, cooperation and teamwork, listening carefully to instructions and encouraging one another every step of the way. The positive support and some of the kind words shared between friends were genuinely gorgeous to witness and made us incredibly proud. We returned yesterday very tired, but with huge smiles, lots of laughter and memories that will last a lifetime. A huge thank you to Mrs Woodmass and Mrs McLean for giving up their time to come with us and support the children throughout the trip — we are so grateful.

Mrs Woodmass: I had the pleasure of going with year 4 on their residential this week.  I have to say we had an amazing time.  The children used their Elsa skills by showing resilience, empathy and encouragement during all the activities.  I was so impressed with them and feel very lucky to have been invited to share this experience.

Year 5 have enjoyed a creative and thoughtful week across the curriculum. In Science, they have been learning about climate change and discussing practical ways to reduce their carbon footprints. Art lessons have seen the children experimenting with watercolours to mix and create a range of realistic skin tones for their portraits. They have also risen to challenges in PE with gymnastics creating and performing routines incorporating balances, jumps and rolls, and in Music, they worked in two parts to play 'Smoke on the Water' by Deep Purple on the ukulele, focusing carefully on harmonies.

Year 6 have continued to build their skills across the curriculum this week. In maths, we’ve extended our algebra work by solving two-step equations, tackling new challenges with confidence. In RE, we wrote postcards from Mecca after following the pilgrimage of a Muslim during Hajj, showing thoughtful understanding and empathy. In computing, we’ve continued designing our own apps through coding, while in French we’ve been learning vocabulary for clothes. In English, we’ve begun writing recount letters from the perspective of a World War II evacuee, making strong links to our class novel, Letters from the Lighthouse.

    Enjoy the weekend, Nevin Deakin
