Weekly news from Busy Classes:
Reception have made the most of the beautiful weather, taking their learning outdoors and growing in confidence each day. They have continued to develop their early writing skills by learning about word spaces and capital letters and taking pride in their sentences writing. In maths, the children have enjoyed activities focused on sharing groups equally and fairly, building a strong foundation for understanding numbers. During RE, they have taken time to reflect on special places, sharing their thoughts and experiences with increasing confidence and enthusiasm. They are all prepared to move into the world of BUGS next week!
Year 1 have had a wonderful week, from using compass points to read maps to writing mouth-watering descriptions of the candy house from 'Hansel and Gretel'. The children have also worked incredibly hard to understand equal groups and arrays in Maths, explored robots in Computing, and shared some beautiful ideas in RE about protecting our environment from plastic pollution.
Year 2 have had another busy week of learning. We have been discussing the structure of our narrative, how we set the scene and how we introduce the characters to our stories. We have been learning how to identify and find fractions in Maths and have been continuing with our microhabitat work in Science. In Geography we have been looking at the difference between the climate and the weather. The highlight for some of the class was their trip to Eaton Bank Academy for the inaugural Year 1/Year 2 Indoor Sportshall athletics. It was a lovely event and the children were beautifully behaved and competed with enthusiasm and respect.
At the start of a busy week in Year 3, it was great to see the children choosing from a range of subtraction methods to solve some tricky money problems. By the end of the week, we had tick-tocked our way into our new maths unit ‘time’, where we had the opportunity to sharpen our clock-reading skills. In Science, we have been shining a light on our current scientific enquiry by exploring all things light and discovering ‘How we see?’ Meanwhile, in French, the children became artistes, creating their own Guess Who? style portraits complete with written descriptions in French. Qui est-ce?
This week in Year 4, we have been focusing on our morphology lessons, exploring how words change and how meaning can be built by adding suffixes. In spelling, we have been learning the rules for adding -s and -es to base words, helping us to understand plurals and verb agreement more clearly. In maths, we have continued to practise our times tables using TT Rockstars. This has been a key focus to support quick recall and build confidence when working with multiplication facts. In English, we have begun writing our introductions about the Hydra, the ancient mythological beast. The children have shown great creativity in describing this powerful creature and setting the scene for their writing. Well done to everyone for their hard work this week!
Year 5 have had a creative and engaging week across the curriculum. In English, they have been exploring cinquains (five-line poems with specific rules for each of the lines) working as detectives to find out the rules for creating these. In Maths, the children have been developing their skills in reading and plotting data on line graphs. In Music, they have been enjoying their ukulele lessons where they have begun preparing for their exciting upcoming concert at Bridgewater Hall with the Hallé Orchestra, while in Science they have been learning all about the life cycles of birds, insects and amphibians.
In Year 6 maths, we’ve been working on graphs and pie charts before moving on to area and perimeter — we are now very close to completing the maths curriculum in preparation for SATs. In PE, we’ve been developing our athletics skills, including sprinting and long jump. On Monday, we visited Eaton Bank, where the children enjoyed touring the school and taking part in a music lesson, playing drums and focusing on rhythm — a fantastic experience for everyone. In science, we’ve been thinking about diet and nutrition, exploring how to keep our bodies healthy. There was also lots of excitement as we received our timetable of activities for our upcoming residential at Manor Adventure at the end of June — we can’t wait!
Weekly update from ELSA: I have had the opportunity of working with year 4 this week. We have been discussing friendships and what makes a loyal friend. Year 4 were absolutely gorgeous and demonstrated all the right tools to make and keep lasting friendships. So very proud of them.
We hope you all enjoy the Bank Holiday long weekend with your families
