    Weekly news from Mrs Deakin

That was a very quick 4 day week wasn’t it? Even though it was a short week – it’s been SO busy! Did you hear/see that we have filled our pond? Our Year 6 boys in particular; George V, George F, Alfie, Joel, Stanley and Harry P along with Mrs McLean & Mrs TP have been pretty fantastic in preparing the pond, laying the lining and preparing the ground. What a legacy these young men will leave behind when they leave us in a few weeks. THANK YOU SO MUCH.

Next week is SATS for our Year 6 children (please see their separate message wishing them lots of luck) but I would also like to thank the staff for their hard work, preparation and support in preparing the children. Mrs Wilson, Miss Peckham and Mrs Woodmass have been nothing short of superstars! Wishing everyone LOTS of luck and love.

Please remember to purchase your tickets for F&F’S fabulous Bubble Blast for Sunday 17th May. Tickets can be purchased from www.martonf&f.co.uk Next Friday (15th May) is crazy hair day in return for sweets for the tombola for this event. Children are welcome to come dressed in school uniform with crazy hair. We are very excited to see everyone!

    Weekly news from Busy Classes:

This week, Reception have been very busy beginning their new learning about minibeasts. The children have enjoyed exploring different habitats to discover where minibeasts live and talked about why they choose certain places to hide, shelter and find food. They have also started learning about moths and discussed some of the differences between moths and butterflies, noticing features such as their colours, wings and when they are most active. In Maths, the children have been focusing on sharing and grouping objects, exploring odd and even numbers, and practising doubles through practical activities and games. It has been a busy and exciting week full of curiosity and exploration. Next week they are very excited about exploring the Woolly Bear Caterpillar book!

Year 1 have had a busy week with phonics.  We're loving the alien words and are working hard to apply all our graphemes, digraphs and trigraphs. We've finished the week by writing our descriptions of the Candy House.  I am feeling really hungry as I read about white icing dripping off gingerbread houses and strawberry laces winding around windows!  What super imaginations Year 1 have got!  Don't worry though, they've warned others to stay away from the tempting house. We've been talking about fractions in maths and are now moving on to using positional language to describe shapes - we're doing a lot of spinning around in circles to help us understand quarter and half turns!  We're continuing our RE topic of Creation as we learn about the Hindu creation story.  Year 1 have also created their very own leaf sculptures and are looking forward to painting them next week.

This week in Year 2 we have had a very busy 4-day week! The children have been working hard on writing their exciting superhero stories and have shown lots of creativity and imagination. In maths, we have been learning about unit and non-unit fractions and practising how to recognise and compare them. In science, we explored bulbs and seeds and learned about how plants grow. We are also very excited about the new school pond and cannot wait to see it develop over the coming weeks!

This week in Year 3, we have continued exploring pitch in music - this week through physical and pictorial composition. We had such fun doing this and are excited to begin our own musical compositions next week. In science, we have planned and carried out experiments all about light and shadows. Meanwhile, in English, the classroom has been buzzing with persuasive language as the children have been using a variety of subordinating clauses to complete their adverts about visiting Egypt. Their writing is so persuasive that we’re already packing our suitcases!

This week in Year 4, we carefully planned and created our final Greek structures in DT. We evaluated our finished products and thought about what worked well and what we could improve next time. In Maths, we have been focusing on the 7 times table and improving our quick on recall of all the other multiplication facts. Much focus is still on TT Rockstars to help us. In spelling, we have been recapping the spelling rule of adding -y to nouns to turn them into verbs.

Year 5 have had another busy and exciting week of learning. In English, the children have been planning and writing their own cinquains, carefully following the specific syllable and grammar patterns for each line. In RSHE and Science, they have approached their learning about the human life cycle, including puberty and adolescence, with maturity and curiosity. Meanwhile, in Maths they have completed their statistics unit and begun exploring angles in shapes, and in Geography they carried out a field investigation to identify the most common trees around the KS2 playground and wooded area.

Year 6 enjoyed the long weekend and came back ready for the final push before SATs, showing great determination and focus in all of their learning. We have been working incredibly hard to complete our final maths unit on area, perimeter and volume. In English, our SPaG work has been linked to The Highwayman, preparing us to begin writing exciting narratives based on the poem over the next few weeks. In science, we conducted a heart rate experiment to investigate the effect of exercise on the body, collecting and analysing our own results. In art, we began sculpting food models out of clay, showing lots of creativity and care with our designs, while in French we have been learning how to describe animals.

Good luck to all of Year 6 for SATs next week — they are ready to give it their very best and I know how hard they have worked, whatever the outcome.

From our Green Guardian, Mrs McLean: This week has seen great excitement for the Eco Council and gardening groups. Last Monday the children in gardening club enjoyed creating friendly lions using dandelions and then used their muscles to move soil! On Wednesday all members of the Eco Council took part in a national survey for the British Trust for Ornithology called Birds in Greenspaces. The school grounds were added to the national map and during a timed thirty minutes we recorded 85 birds that visited our space. The boys in year 6 have also taken delivery of a truck load of bark and have worked hard upgrading our picnic area, not to mention their magnificent efforts with our pond!

Wishing everyone a super weekend, Nevin Deakin
