Weekly news from Mrs Deakin
A huge thank you to our wonderful School Council for organising our Jeans for Genes Day today. They have worked so hard to get everyone involved, and it has been so lovely to see the children taking real ownership of the day and helping us to support such an important cause.
I am always so proud to see our children thinking about others and making a difference in our wider community. Thank you to all our families too for supporting the School Council and helping to make the day such a success.
Weekly news from busy classes:
Reception have continued to explore new activities and experiences, while developing confidence and making lots of new friends along the way. It can be quite tricky being 1 of 30. They are learning to respect each other's 'bubbles'. They are beginning to learn new letters and are enjoying practising their phonics skills, including the tricky skills of blending and segmenting sounds to help them read and build words. It has been wonderful to see their enthusiasm, curiosity and growing confidence as they learn together.
What a busy week Year 1 have had! We have loved reading about Bumblebear, and the children have impressed us as they've used their phonics to write about Norman and his time at Bee School!
In Geography, we have been exploring where we live and we've been looking at maps of our area. We have been building our understanding of place value to 10 during our maths lessons and we are working hard to form our numbers carefully and correctly. We have also started learning about the Harvest Festival in RE, discussing why it is celebrated and why it is important to give thanks.
It’s been a busy week in Year 3! In Maths, we’ve been mastering place value and in English, we’ve explored the features of non-chronological reports as we prepare to write about some fascinating Stone Age beasts.
We’ve been lucky to enjoy all things ELSA with Mrs Woodmass, learning about our feelings and have explored the importance of inclusion and supporting others through The Hueys in the New Jumper.

Another super week in Year 4! This week, we have been comparing and ordering numbers up to 10,000. We have also continued to work on our times tables using Times Tables Rock Stars. Please keep practising at home – quick and confident times table recall is so important in Year 4 and really helps across many areas of maths!
We have continued our exciting Romans topic and learnt about Mark Antony and Cleopatra, finding out about their fascinating place in Roman history.
In French, we have been learning how to talk about how we feel, practising new vocabulary and speaking in simple French sentences.
Our science learning has focused on sorting and classifying animals. We have looked carefully at different features and discussed how these can be used to group animals. Well done, Year 4, for a super week of learning!
Year 5 have had a fantastic week of exciting new learning and experiences. They have thoroughly enjoyed their first two ukulele lessons with Mr Pinfold and the children should be able to show off what they can play at home. Their topic this half term in PE is invasion sports and the children have been developing their teamwork and skills in handball with our PE teacher, Finn. In English, the children have been using their imaginations to create fictional planets, carefully developing the flora, fauna, geographical features, climate and weather conditions, ready to write about these in non-chronological reports next week. I
n History, the children have travelled back in time to learn about the key factors behind the Roman withdrawal from Britannia and the crumbling of the Roman Empire.
Year 6 have had another busy and productive week! In maths, we completed our work on place value and have now moved on to addition and subtraction, building on our calculation skills. In English, we have begun writing non-chronological reports about yellow-spotted lizards, making links with our class novel, Holes.
In art, the children have produced some beautiful self-portraits after carefully studying individual facial features, including eyes and mouths, and developing their observational drawing skills. We have also made a start on our new science topic, Living Things and Their Habitats, while in French we have been learning vocabulary linked to school.
And finally… I’m hijacking Year 2 this week!
I’ve had the absolute pleasure of teaching Year 2 this week, and what a treat they have been! We’ve had lots of fun with maths, including the introduction of a game I created many, many years ago when I was a brand-new teacher called ‘Joker in the Pack’. The game relies on rapid recall of place value, and Year 2 were absolutely terrific! Their speed, confidence and enthusiasm were brilliant to see. So much so that I’ve decided this little game deserves another outing…Year 5 — you’re next!
