    Head's Up!

    2 October 2026 (by headmarton)

    Weekly news from Mrs Deakin

Our classes have been incredibly busy this week – so I’ll keep my message brief today.

It was lovely to see so many parents and carers today for our Fairtrade coffee afternoon, thank you for ALL your support. Special thanks to Ethos Group for organising today and for their thoughtful messages around school this week. We always love when our children lead on something and we are so proud of them!

Weekly news from very busy classes:

This week, Reception have loved sharing the story The Friendship Bench. The children enjoyed making friendship benches with their friends, meeting a new friend called Sid the Dog, and writing postcards to their friends around the classroom. These activities helped the children develop their communication skills, kindness and understanding of friendship. In Maths, reception have been exploring measures, including length and mass, through a range of practical and engaging activities. They especially enjoyed using weighing scales to compare and measure different objects. Getting the scales out is always great fun when you are 4 and 5!

Year 1 have had an exciting week in phonics as we have started learning Phase 5 sounds! The children have decided these are golden sounds (as the cards are yellow), so we're definitely celebrating this new learning. We have written a fact file about bears this week, and the children have really impressed me! We have also been learning about the countries that are part of the UK, as well as thinking about the difference between a village, town and a city.  On Tuesday we had a french flavour to the day, and Miss Peckham read our end-of-day story, Superworm, in french! Wow!

It has been another busy and exciting week in Year 2! In Maths, we have been practising our number bonds to 10 and exploring number bonds to 100. We have also been learning how to find one more than a given number. In English, we have been identifying the subject of a sentence and thinking carefully about who or what the sentence is about. We also enjoyed celebrating French Day! We had a fantastic time learning about French culture and, of course, enjoyed some delicious croissants and pain au chocolat! What a lovely treat! Well done, Year 2, for another week of hard work, learning and fun!

Year 3 have travelled back to the Stone Age this week, to explore continuity and change between the Palaeolithic and Mesolithic periods, discovering how life evolved over time in the pre historic era. In music, we’ve been getting to grips with crotchets, quavers and rests, while singing and playing the glockenspiel to the ever-popular ‘BINGO’ – a real class favourite! In Maths, we’ve kicked off our new addition and subtraction unit - showing some already established skill, and in English, we’ve been busy spotting subjects and verbs in single-clause sentences. Tuesday brought a fun and number-tastic French day, as we practised saying, reading and writing numbers to 10 en français. Très bien, Year 3!

We’ve had another busy and enjoyable week in Year 4! In English, we have been learning how to use subordinating clauses to add extra detail to our sentences. We’re looking forward to applying this new skill in our writing. In Music, we have been learning about arranging music and exploring how different musical ideas can be put together. We also enjoyed French Day, where we practised ‘Je me présente’ and developed our confidence in introducing ourselves and talking about ourselves in French. In RE, we learnt about the story of David and Goliath and discussed the important message that God looks at the heart rather than judging people by their outward appearance. Finally, as part of our No Outsiders work, we visited King & King. The children had great fun creating their own wedding invitations for Prince Lee and Prince Bert, thinking about love, families and celebrating differences. Well done, Year 4, for another fantastic week!

It's been another positive week in Year 5. We really enjoyed celebrating the European Day of Languages on Tuesday and took part in a French day, where the children learnt the French names of the days of the week and months of the year, and used these to learn about the different festivals celebrated in France, comparing and contrasting these with our own. The children really enjoyed their PE lesson this week with Finn, where he taught them how to play American football, building on their knowledge of invasion games. In History, the children learnt about the push and pull factors that led to the Anglo-Saxons migrating to Britannia, and in Science, the children were very excited to learn about the planets of the solar system. Well done, Year 5, on another fantastic week!

In Year 6 in maths, the children have been tackling long multiplication and developing their confidence with more complex calculations. In science, we have been exploring the fascinating world of microorganisms, learning about viruses, bacteria and fungi. Our geography work has continued to focus on plastics and sustainability, with the children beginning to plan a survey to investigate plastic usage across our school. Tuesday was a particular highlight as we enjoyed our French Day! Year 6 took a virtual sightseeing trip around Paris, discovering some of its famous landmarks and attractions before putting their learning together to create their own Paris tourist guides. Très bien, Year 6!

ELSA news: There’s been a hive of activities in the Elsa room this week.  The children have been completing a pupil voice to identify their feelings.  During the coming weeks they will learn strategies to manage big feelings and build resilience.
